For the 1/3 live TV show, the main event is a cage match with Joe &
Angle vs. Aces and 8s. Whether it’s here or at some point, they need to
do a cage match with Joe & Angle & Garett Bischoff & Wes
Brisco as the face team and reprise the famous Dusty Rhodes & Ole
Anderson vs. Assassins angle from Atlanta. The Assassins were feuding
with Rhodes. Anderson had been a babyface for several months but never
teamed with Rhodes because they had one of the great feuds of the era. I
think they had one match, and then Anderson in a promo suggested a
rematch in a cage, and the stips were that each side could pick a
special ref because in the first match, the refs got destroyed. So
Dusty & Ole picked the returning Gene Anderson while The Assassins
picked Ivan Koloff (Anderson’s long-time tag team partner and when
Anderson made his turn, it was to feud with Koloff).
Anyway, unlike
today where they would go a regular 20:00 main event and have the turn
at the finish, on this one, as soon as the cage door locked, Ole &
Gene turned on Dusty and The Assassins joined in, and then Koloff, who
hesitated, not figuring out what was happening, also joined in). None
of the faces could save since the heels inside would knock them off the
fence for minutes every time one would climb. When they finally got in,
Koloff started swinging a chain. It was one of the great angles in
history and led to one of the greatest interviews ever on TV the next
morning by Ole.
