UFC officially confirmed this morning that Thiago Tavares tested
positive for the steroid Drostanolone, a steroid generally used to
maintain strength while dropping weight.
Tavares has been suspended for nine months.
Tavares was defeated in just 1:55 in his fight on the 1/19 show in
Sao Paulo, Brazil, by Khabib Nurmagomedov. He tested positive in a test
by UFC after the show.
All fighters on the show were tested by UFC and Tavares was the only positive result.
The release on UFC.com also addressed Vitor Belfort, who Dana White
said several days ago was not the person who had a quesiontable test.
They stated Belfort tested negative for PEDs, but was on medically
approved testosterone replacement therapy after being diagnosed with
hypogonadism (low testosterone) by a Nevada medical doctor. The
therapy, in theory, is to boost those with natural low testosterone to a
normal level.
