UFC Fight Night Sweden results & live coverage: Gunnar Nelson vs. Rick Story !
By Josh Nason, Wrestling Observer
Another UFC doubleheader is upon us and as we find ourselves in the throes of October baseball, yours truly is starting this afternoon. Surely, this Sweden event can't be a, ahem, no-hitter.
Today's UFC Fight Night event is on Fight Pass and kicks off at 12:10 PM EST, headlined by what could be the next big thing at welterweight in Gunnar Nelson. The Icelandic hero is also big in Sweden, hence his main event status in Stockholm against someone who isn't of main event status in Rick Story. With a win here, it's time to test Nelson against a lower end Top 10 fighter. A loss would be his first.
Prelims, chock full of "Who?" and "Oh.":
- Zubaira Tukhugov def. Ernest Chavez by 1st round TKO (4:21) - Featherweight
Should You Watch rating? Sure.
Chavez is dropping down a weight class for this one. Both guys have competed in the UFC before, so there's that. ZT is a Tiger Muay Thai fighter, so hopefully this will be more entertaining than his teammate Brian Ebersole's outing last week. ZT is winging Liddell-esque left hands at Chavez and is tossing in spinning back fists because he can. He looks very comfortable in there.
The end came when ZT blasted Chavez with a right hand and he swarmed with lefts and rights, hooks and uppercuts. This was the definition of finishing a guy. He made Chavez look like it was his first MMA fight. At 2-0 in the UFC, he could be an interesting prospect to watch at featherweight in the next 12 months.
- Mairbek Taisumov def. Marcin Bandel by 1st round TKO (1:01) - Lightweight
Should You Watch rating? Sure.
This is Bandel's UFC debut and he's a legit prospect. He's won 12 straight: all first round submissions. Taisumov is 1-1 in his short UFC career.
Well, that ended badly for Bandel. Taisumov cracked Bandel with a right hand that put him on his ass and followed with a few punches for the stoppage. The ref was kind of half-in, half-out on the stoppage, but it was good as Bandel was out of it. Life is a lot different outside the UFC.
Tiger Muay Thai is 2-0 on the night already. Roger Huerta even got some mic time.
- Tor Troeng vs. Krzysztof Jotko at middleweight up next.
Should You Watch rating? - TBD
We're told both guys are in a must-win situation here, which is refreshing. Stakes matter, people. Troeng is our first Swedish fighter of the night and the crowd responds in kind.
R1: Troeng kept going for a takedown, and did a lot of grinding up against the cage. Jotko blocked most of them, save one insta-takedown that didn't result in anything. Jotko hit a nice elbow to a charging Troeng and a flush left hand at the end of the 1st. He also threw a knee after the bell and yelled "Whoooo!" which the Swedes didn't take kindly too. 10-9 Jotko
R2:
- Magnus Cedenblad vs. Scott Askham
- Nico Musoke vs. Alexander Yakovlev
- Dennis Siver vs. Rob Whiteford
- Cathal Pendred vs. Gasan Umalatov
And our main card:
- Niklas Bäckström vs. Mike Wilkinson
- Ilir Latifi vs. Jan Błachowicz
- Akira Corassani vs. Max Holloway
- Gunnar Nelson vs. Rick Story
