The International Olympic Committee confirmed earlier today that
wrestling will be dropped from the summer Olympics after the 2016 games
in Brazil.
Wrestling has been an Olympic games fixture since 1896.
IOC Spokesman Mark Adams confirmed the story first broken by the AP hours ago to Houston Mitchell of the Los Angeles Times.
Wrestling will attempt to get back in from a list of several sports,
but the odds are very low that a sport just dropped would be let back
in. It came down to wrestling and Modern Pentathlon, which was largely
expected to be dropped.
It is believed that sport was saved because Juan Antonio Samaranch
Jr., the son of the former IOC President, and a member of the IOC board
is the Vice President of the world governing body of the Pentathlon.
