The May 14 edition of TNA Impact from last Thursday night averaged a 1.23 rating, which was up 3.5 percent from last week's 1.19 rating. The show's ratings increase was impressive since it was head-to-head against the most-watched NBA game ever on ESPN between the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers.

Even more impressive is that the second hour of the broadcast averaged a 1.32 rating compared to a 1.15 rating for the first hour of the show.

The show peaked in the fifth quarter hour with a 1.37 rating for an Awesome Kong squash over Kip James and the beginning of the British Invasion vs. Amazing Red & Suicide match. The quarter-hour benefited from having only one commercial and starting with actual wrestling at the top of the second hour instead of a commercial, which has been a bad habit in the past.

Looking at the long-term ratings, the May 14 episode was still down compared to the previous five and ten weeks of TV. TNA is in a valley right now due to the NBA Playoffs, but should rebound nicely in two weeks when the Playoffs are off cable TV.

Compared to the previous five weeks of TV, viewership was down 7.7 percent. Compared to the previous ten weeks, the show was down 10.7 percent. Against the entire year, the show was down 5.9 percent.

Caldwell's Analysis: Really impressive numbers from TNA last week considering they were up against the most-watched NBA game ever on ESPN. Rockets-Lakers Game 6 was viewed by 7.5 million viewers right in the middle of the Impact broadcast, but TNA held strong in the male demos to increase the second hour rating very nicely. I believe the key is having action in the ring at the top of the second hour to entice viewers to stick around for the rest of the hour. Starting the second hour with a commercial break is not the way to go.
